My Approach

THE GONSTEAD ADVANTAGE

Our patients travel from all over the world to experience the Gonstead Technique. The science behind this cutting-edge technique results in the most accurate, specific, and definite approach in evaluating and adjusting the spine. Because the spinal column is a dynamic structure affecting the entire body, the Gonstead Technique uses five criteria to check the spine
for motion, soft tissue damage, and neurological dysfunction. This valuable and detailed analysis includes instrumentation, static palpation, motion palpation, visualization, and spinal imaging followed
by adjusting the articulations of the spine by hand only. Through this comprehensive, proactive approach to correcting the spine, we find that the entire body begins functioning better as a whole. There is a clinical logic to every decision made for each and every patient. This ensures the principles outlined by Dr. Gonstead will be duplicated, the results achieved, and satisfied patient referrals stimulated.

INSTRUMENTATION
The Gonstead chiropractor uses a thermal detection instrument that discerns heat differentials along the spine consistent with inflammation and nerve pressure. The instrument obtains objective neurological evidence of vertebral subluxation and monitors the progress of patient care.

STATIC + MOTION PALPITATION
When nerves are compressed and spinal joints malfunction, they produce swelling (edema) in the area; they “lock up” and surrounding muscles tighten. Your Gonstead chiropractor will feel for these areas on your back and neck using the fingertips and can feel which joints move improperly.

VISUALIZATION
Your Gonstead chiropractor visually looks for abnormalities in skin, muscle tone, posture, and gait to help locate misalignments of your spine. Visualization is crucial when taking into account all other criteria and making important decisions about your corrective care.

SPINAL IMAGING
Postural spinal images allow for a “blueprint” of your spine, which is important in determining specifically how the involved spinal segments are to be adjusted. Spinal images are also helpful in determining contraindications like fracture, postural distortions, and arthritic conditions.

THE DIFFERENCE

The differenceOnly chiropractors are trained to detect and correct vertebral subluxation, which means that if your condition is caused by a subluxation, a chiropractor can help. Chiropractors are focused on correcting the cause of your symptom, not merely covering your symptom. While there are over 200 chiropractic techniques, some have a greater degree of measurable attributes while preserving the philosophy of chiropractic. The Gonstead System is commonly known as the most biomechanically specific and scientific full spine technique that produces measurable and repeatable results.

ANATOMY

AnatomyThe spinal cord is an extension of the brain. Delicate nerves flow down the spine and out little holes called the intervertebral foramina (IVF). Each IVF is formed by the bone above and bone below spaced by the intervertebral disc. These nerves connect to each and every muscle, organ, gland, and tissue of the body. Since the nerves pass through the IVF, it is essential the hole remains as large as possible. Two things that determine IVF size are proper alignment of the vertebrae and the height of the disc. Misalignment creates a smaller hole, which interferes with healthy nerve function.

ALIGNMENT

Normally, the bone above is prevented from misaligning forward by the facet joint involving the bone below; however, only ligaments protect the bones from misaligning backward. Under enough trauma or repeated stress, the ligaments become stretched and the discs break down, which make the IVF smaller.

DISC INVOLVEMENT

The disc is very strong in a non-degenerated state; however, repeated twisting and bending can create micro-tears and weaken it. This soft tissue damage leads to swelling and irritates the nearby delicate nerves. Over time if the disc is not properly aligned, it will degenerate and make the IVF smaller.

THE ANALYSIS

The AnalysisWe use five criteria to determine which spinal joints are responsible for your condition. Advanced instrumentation accurately determines the exact location of your condition. Postural spinal images are used to determine how the vertebrae and involved disc have misaligned and the direction they must be corrected.

THE SPECIFIC AND SCIENTIFIC ADJUSTMENT

40The Gonstead Technique respects the disc as the primary source of subluxation. Since rotation along with bending is the most damaging movement to the disc, there is no rotation used in the Gonstead adjustment. Adjustments of the neck are performed while seated in a chair with no rotation or twisting involved. Low back adjusting may be performed while side lying on a bench in a comfortable neutral position. Because of the attention to detail and gentle care during the adjustment, it is incredibly safe and effective.

THE RESULT

The ResultBefore and after spinal imaging is an important element of confirming the success or furthering of our focused efforts on the discs to realign the spine toward a healthy normal posture. By correcting the structure of the spine with time and repetition, patients will sustain their results and likely rid themselves of other symptoms, some of which they may have suffered for years. The Gonstead Technique is logical, safe, and may be the most complete chiropractic system ever developed.
